Tom Holland: Nolan’s “The Odyssey” is Like No Other Film

According to Cinemadrame News Agency, Tom Holland, in a new interview with GQ Sports, spoke about his experience filming “The Odyssey,” directed by Christopher Nolan, calling it an “unrepeatable” role. He portrays Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, who embarks on a journey in search of his father. The teaser for “The Odyssey” showed Holland as Telemachus, tearfully seeking his father.

“It was amazing,” Holland says. “Without a doubt, it’s an unrepeatable role. I had the best on-set experience of my life. It was incredible. I was excited. It was different. And I think it will be a film like nothing we’ve ever seen.”

He continues: “Working with Chris, getting to know him and Emma [Thomas] was extraordinary. I’d never seen anyone work like them, and it’s no coincidence that they are the best in this profession. Watching them up close, participating in that process, and collaborating with a true master and learning from him was the best experience of my life.”

The film’s story revolves around Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, and his 10-year journey to return home after the Trojan War. Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, Samantha Morton, Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin, Jesse Garcia, Ryan Hurst, and Will Yun Lee will also appear in the film.

Zendaya portrays Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war and Odysseus’s guide, while Charlize Theron will appear as Circe, the goddess of magic who traps Odysseus and his crew on an island. Anne Hathaway, who previously collaborated with Nolan on “Interstellar,” will play Penelope, Odysseus’s wife. Benny Safdie will appear as Agamemnon, the Greek commander in the Trojan War, and Lupita Nyong’o as Clytemnestra, Agamemnon’s wife, who plays a key role in his fate.

Regarding working with Damon and Hathaway, Holland says: “Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway have always been my heroes. So, sharing scenes with them, learning from them, becoming friends with them—I couldn’t have imagined a better role. And I’m proud of my performance. Every day I came with a real sense of purpose and something to prove, and I’m grateful to Chris for giving me this opportunity.”

He previously told ABC in an interview that he received an “unrepeatable phone call” from Nolan, which reminded him of the moment he landed the role of Spider-Man.

“The Odyssey” is filmed entirely with IMAX cameras and is set to be released on July 17, 2026.
